Services

Three kinds of work.
Each one done properly.

We help get your environment back under control after you've grown, or prep it for upcoming growth. Here is what each service covers, and how to tell which one you need.

1

Scaling & Events

You're in the cloud, but are you taking advantage of the cost and availability benefits? Getting ready to launch an application, planning a promotion, or hosting a big event? Do daily surges keep causing downtime?

These are make-or-break moments for your users and your business. We handle the planning, or guide you through it, balancing availability against cost, whether you are planning for a 3x surge or a 300x one.

What we look at

  • Auto Scaling policies and warm-up times
  • Service quotas, before the big day
  • Load balancer and database headroom
  • A scale-down plan, so the surge isn't on next month's bill
2

Cost & Performance Optimization

Balance purchase options, use real data for instance types, and know when you need a racecar versus a bicycle. Share resources where it makes sense, but not when it's a disaster waiting to happen.

Do you really need that 8xl instance running constantly to fire a cron job every hour? Is half the traffic through your load balancer just encryption handshakes? And does anybody know what those EBS snapshots are for?

What we look at

  • Your Cost and Usage Report, mapped to apps and environments
  • Purchase options: On-Demand, Spot, Savings Plans
  • Instance types sized from real usage
  • The bottlenecks worth fixing, and the ones that aren't
From the blog Is Spot actually lowering your AWS bill at all?
3

Architecture & Resilience

Design for the failures you will actually see. Target the availability needed for your real business and services. Stop spending more time answering pages than adding business value.

What we look at

  • Single points of failure
  • Availability targets set by the business, not by habit
  • Fault tolerance, tested rather than assumed
  • Alerts and runbooks that cut the pages

How we work

The same four stages, a fixed price at each.

Whichever service you need, the engagement runs the same way.

  1. 1

    Assess

Read-only access, and a written report you keep.

    • Core $1,000
    • Workload $2,500
    • Comprehensive $5,000
  2. 2

    Plan

You pick which findings to fix. We quote a fixed price, paid by milestone.

  3. 3

    Deliver

We own the changes, or plan them for your team. Weekly reviews.

  4. 4

    Hand over

Infrastructure as code in your repo, runbooks, and a working session.

What we don't offer

We are an agile team of two, and we cannot offer the following services at our quality bar, so we don't offer them at all. We would rather be clear about that up front than take the work and disappoint you.

Instead we focus on engagements with defined goals and objectives that have a distinct start and end, and we hand everything back documented, so keeping the lights on never depends on us being available.
